Presenting research at the conference
Submission Instructions
We are excited to invite submissions for papers and posters for the inaugural COMBA 2026 Conference!
​
To submit, please provide an abstract of 250 words or less that clearly outlines your project, research topic, or creative work related to Black music across any genre, time period, or discipline.
​
Submissions must be received by November 28, 2025.
​
After review, selected presenters will be notified via email with additional instructions and presentation details.
Submission Details
Oral Presentation Details:
If selected for an oral presentation, you will have 15 minutes to present, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session.

NOTE: Due to time constraints, the number of oral presenters is limited. Those who are interested in giving an oral presentation can indicate so in the online submission form. Abstracts from students will be reviewed anonymously by a committee comprised of FSU faculty. Oral presentation decisions will be sent by January 9th, 2026.
IMPORTANT: Even if you are not selected for an oral presentation, you will still be enrolled to participate in the poster session.

The oral presentation sessions will take place in either HMU (Housewright Music Building) 125 or HMU 126. Both rooms will have rows of chairs for the audience and a screen for PowerPoints or other media. Each room is equipped with computer and audio capabilities.

Poster Presentation Details:

Posters must be no larger than 32" (tall) by 48" (wide). All posters must be printed by the presenter. See example below.

NOTE: Contributions from outside of Florida State University are more than welcome to use their own university's insignia.

Where can I print my poster (FSU students only)?

FSU students can print their posters at The UPS Store Printing Services located at 206 S Woodward ave, Tallahassee, FL 32304.

If I want to submit multiple abstracts, do I need to complete multiple applications?

Yes. A separate application must be completed for each abstract you wish to submit.

​How to set up poster?
-
Create a new blank slide, then go to File > Page Setup. Select "Slide sized for: Custom" and change the measurements to the size of your poster 32" x 48" (use inches); posters MUST be designed to the actual printed size.

Use standard, such as Arial or Calibre, are preferred.

Use the Symbol font for all bullets and special characters, rather than using the special characters in your text font; these special characters are not mapped correctly within certain fonts between computer platforms and may not print correctly.
